Abstract

This study investigated whether different facets of identity – values, demographics, and preferences – elicit varying levels of hate when threatened, and whether political extremism moderates this relationship. A total of 497 U.S.-based participants were recruited and completed an online experiment in which they created personal profiles and received pre-generated identity-threatening feedback based on their selected identity components. We hypothesized that threats to participants’ values would elicit the strongest response, but did not find any significant results that would support this hypothesis. Further, we predicted that participants scoring high on political extremism would experience more hate feelings. There was a slight indication, but no significant results were observed. Finally, we tested if political extremists would react strongest to their values being threatened; no such effect was observed, either. Our non-results indicate weaknesses in our research design, especially a weak manipulation of inducing hate feelings. The findings suggest that further research with higher realism is necessary to explore the impact of identity threats on hate feelings. Keywords: Identity threats, political extremism, hate, values
