Abstract
Self-regulated learning (SRL) is essential for educational development, yet students with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) often face persistent difficulties in this domain. Although various interventions have been developed to promote SRL in this population, motivational aspects are frequently overlooked. Self-Determination Theory (SDT) provides a relevant framework, which argues that motivation improves when the psychological needs for autonomy, competence, and relatedness are fulfilled. This systematic review examines the extent to which SDT components are integrated into existing strategies and interventions that aim to enhance SRL in learners with ASD (ages 4–18). Literature was retrieved from three academic databases (PsycINFO, PubMed, and ERIC) using predefined inclusion and exclusion criteria. Seventeen empirical studies met the inclusion criteria. Findings show that competence is the most frequently addressed SDT component, typically through success experiences, structured feedback, and explicit instruction. Autonomy is supported by providing choice, encouraging self-direction, and setting personal goals. Relatedness is often addressed through parent collaboration or positive teacher–student relationships. However, the degree of SDT integration varies considerably across studies. These findings suggest that a more integrated approach of SDT within SRL interventions may contribute to more sustained motivation and the use of more effective learning strategies in students with ASD. The discussion elaborates on theoretical and practical implications, methodological limitations, and provides suggestions for future research.
