Abstract
The recent surge of media attention to the upcoming contributor in the art world, namely artificial intelligence (AI), comes with questions about ethics and potential differences between the emotional evaluation of AI-generated and human-made art. Previous studies suggested a bias against AI art, it being perceived as less creative and meaningful, and showed that phrasing, which is a way of wording something, can shape emotional responses. This study examines how affective phrasing influences the emotional evaluation of AI generated and human-made art. A total of 199 participants viewed 12 images of artworks (Source: AI-generated or human-made) accompanied by text (Phrasing: positively or negatively). After each image, they expressed their experienced emotion. A repeated measures analysis of variances, followed by Bonferroni post-hoc tests, revealed no substantial main effects of Source or Phrasing on emotional valence. Although the emotional evaluation of AI-generated art depended on the type of phrasing, this effect was small. Positively phrased AI-generated artworks were perceived most negative in terms of emotional valence. These findings suggest that while artworks’ Source and how they are Phrased have limited direct effects separately, certain combinations do subtly influence emotional responses. Future research should include additional factors to improve generalizability and further explore evolving attitudes toward AI in the art world.
