Abstract

Mindfulness research has found success in mindfulness-based interventions such as mindfulness-based stress reduction (MBSR) but has left out wisdom practices from their original Buddhist context (Analayo, 2021; Lindahl, 2015). Research has shown that these practices address supplementary aspects of well-being and mindfulness, and unexplored outcomes such as liberation, i.e. untethered well-being. However, there is a lack of research into mindfulness-based interventions which overtly include wisdom practices and pursue the goal of liberation. This study compared a 4-week intervention which includes wisdom elements and pursued liberation (mindfulness+), a 4-week MBSR and an active control on well-being, mindfulness and wisdom. It was hypothesized that the mindfulness conditions improve more than the active control on well-being, mindfulness and wisdom-related outcomes; and that the mindfulness+ condition improves more than the MBSR condition on wisdom. Sixty-nine participants were assigned to one of the three conditions and completed pre- and post-intervention assessments. Repeated-measures ANOVAs revealed no significant differences on condition-by-time interactions on any of the outcomes. Results of this study (1) emphasize the importance of time investment and instructor qualifications, and (2) highlight that assessing potential benefits of Buddhist psychology requires a better understanding, conceptualization and operationalization of Buddhist concepts. Keywords: Mindfulness, Mindfulness-based stress reduction (MBSR), wisdom practices, liberation
