Abstract

The prevalence of internalizing problems has increased over the past centuries. It is important to focus on the prevention of internalizing problems, because the consequences of internalizing problems can have a big impact on someone’s life. Previous studies have found that optimism can play a role in the prevention of internalizing problems in children aged 9 up to 14. Research on optimism and internalizing problems in children aged 6 up to 7 is scarce, which was therefore the focus of this bachelor thesis. It was expected that optimistic children would experience lower levels of internalizing problems. For this bachelor thesis, data were collected from 83 children and their teachers from seven schools in the Netherlands. Child optimism was measured with the Youth Life Orientation Test (YLOT), and this questionnaire was completed by the children. Internalizing problems were measured with two items from the Teacher’s Checklist of Psychopathology (TCP), which was completed by the teacher. The association between optimism and internalizing problems has been investigated with linear regression analysis. The bootstrap procedure was used, because two assumptions of the linear regression analysis were violated. Contrary to expectations, a positive association was found between optimism and internalizing problems. Optimistic children experienced more internalizing problems. This may be explained by the fact that only the teacher’s perspective on the child’s internalizing problems was used. In addition, the YLOT may have been too difficult for children aged 6 up to 7. The positive association found in this bachelor thesis should be further explored in future research since a positive association goes against previous research in older children.
