Abstract

Objective: The experience sampling method (ESM) seems to be a beneficial psychiatric assessment tool in improving clinical decision making, as it is insightful in daily life, measured over time, and flexible. This study aims to determine the feasibility of an ESM for people in secondary mental health care and to answer whether there are differences in feasibility between a clinical population and a general population. Additionally, it aims to explore whether levels of psychopathology influence the feasibility of an ESM. Method: Out of the total 96 participants in the three months during ESM, 72 filled in the evaluation questionnaire, with a mean age of 24,6 years-old and a four to one female-male ratio. The participants were split into four groups based on increasing levels of risk of psychosis (N1=25 , N2 =25, N3=14 , N4=8). The resulting data were analysed using visual inspection, a Kruskal-Wallis test, and a Mann-Whitney U test, to explore whether the differences between subgroups were significant. Results: All subgroups showed little to no problems with feasibility, nor were any significant differences between the clinical and non-clinical groups found. Levels of psychopathology showed only one significant difference: lower levels reported filling in the questionnaire more carefully when it was shorter. Most participants who did not fill in the evaluation questionnaire belonged to the subgroups with higher risk levels of psychosis. Lastly, the two most important reasons for missing a questionnaire seemed to be social or work related. Conclusion: ESM seems to be a promising tool for clinical decision making. However, the attrition bias towards participants with higher clinical distress calls for future research before we can come to definitive conclusions. Generally, a personalised approach seems to be important to get the most out of ESM.
