Abstract
Past research primarily employed negative framing to increase individuals’ intentions to participate in collective action via negative emotions. More recently, as more is known about the motivational power of positive emotions, the focus has begun to shift to positive framing. The present study aims to contribute to this by testing the ability of a Positive Tipping Point (PTP) frame to increase collective action intentions via hope and pride, in the context of climate change. To test potential mechanisms through which the PTP frame may achieve this, experimental conditions also included efficacy and/or social norms manipulations. The manipulation was in the style of a social media post and tailored to UK participants, focusing on a local climate issue (floods). Results showed the efficacy and social norms additions did not significantly increase collective action intentions (vs. control). However, hope and pride had a significant indirect effect on collective action intentions in both the efficacy and efficacy plus social norms condition (vs. control). These findings add evidence to the notion that positive emotions may be of importance for collective action and suggest that a less researched emotion, pride, may deserve more attention. Collective action research may help combat climate change by increasing insight into how to design climate change communication to most effectively stimulate collective action.
