Abstract

This research aims to find the most dominant epistemic beliefs and academic emotions attained during the writing of a bachelor’s thesis. Apart from that it aims to find a relation between epistemic beliefs and academic emotions in the setting of the bachelor’s thesis. The research was done with last year’s students of behavioural and social sciences studies that are busy with writing their bachelors thesis, using a qualitative explorative method which in turn makes use of semi-structured interviews. After conducting the interviews, they were transcribed and coded with the help of the program ATLAS.ti. The results showed that there is no dominant epistemic belief, but rather certain consents made between the participants. They all view knowledge as more context driven than completely certain and unchangeable, and they all agree that knowledge cannot come from the use of just one source, one would need multiple sources before taking something for granted. The results of the academic emotions showed that there also is not a clear dominant emotion present. Most participants had a healthy balance between positive and negative emotions. Because there are no dominant beliefs or emotions, there is also no clear relationship found between the two. This research showed, with qualitative data, that there is no clear relationship between the epistemic beliefs and academic emotions of a last year’s student who is busy with their bachelors’ thesis.
