Abstract

Previous research has identified links between anxiety, depression, sleep, sexual dysfunction, and sexual distress. Nevertheless, no study has examined how these five variables interact. This research explored the mediating role of sleep in the relationship between sexual dysfunction and sexual distress on anxious and depressive symptomatology. The study was performed using the data of Wave 7 from a large-scale longitudinal study called the Netherlands Study of Depression and Anxiety (NESDA), with a total of 1725 participants. Sexual dysfunction, sexual distress, insomnia, anxious symptomatology, and depressive symptomatology were measured using well-validated measures. Results indicated that all five variables were interconnected. Sexual dysfunction and distress significantly predicted anxious and depressive symptoms, and this relationship was notably strengthened by adding insomnia scores as a mediator. The current findings highlight the complex interplay between sex, sleep, and mental health (symptomatology). The findings on the roles of sexual dysfunction, sexual distress, and insomnia suggest new targets for mental health treatment, especially since addressing insomnia in individuals with sexual issues could be an effective strategy to reduce anxiety and depression. Future research should aim to further investigate these relationships using longitudinal and experimental designs to establish causal links. This study emphasizes the benefits of a more holistic approach to mental health care that acknowledges the links between sexual health, sleep, and emotional well-being.
