Abstract

In this study, the relationship between awe, ego dissolution and interpersonal forgiveness was investigated. Previous research suggests that awe may reduce self-focus and promote prosocial behavior by eliciting a diminished sense of self. Forgiveness and ego dissolution were measured using validated self-report scales. The 157 participants were randomly assigned to watch the awe-inducing nature video, the awe-inducing space video or the control video. Before watching the video, participants were asked to think and write about someone who had wronged them. The manipulation check confirmed that the awe videos successfully elicited higher feelings of awe than the control condition. However, no significant effect of awe on interpersonal forgiveness was found. Although awe led to more ego dissolution, no evidence was found for the mediating role of ego dissolution on interpersonal forgiveness. These findings diverge from previous studies and suggest that personal factors and the intensity of the awe experience may influence outcomes. Limitations and recommendations for future research are discussed.
