Abstract
There is a growing interest in researching the expansive uses of the bodily-tactile modality to enhance tactile experiences and cognition in individuals with congenital deafblindness (CDB). However, studies on educational activities and how they can be used to enhance the bodily-tactile modality is needed. This single-case research follows a pupil with CDB and his teacher in creative arts sessions. This was a quantitative effect study with a baseline, intervention and post-intervention phases. The study used video-recordings, The Tactile Working Memory Scale (TWMS) to capture the progress of the pupil’s bodily-tactile cognition. The teacher was also coached in implementing learning strategies to enhance the bodily-tactile modality in the pupil. This research captured changes in the pupil’s bodily-tactile cognition when the teacher adapted the learning environment while also implementing perceptual- and social cognitive learning strategies into the painting sessions. This study also showed that coaching and guidance to the participating teacher was an important element to the pupil achieving those results. The TWMS captured significant changes in pupil’s bodily-tactile cognitive abilities in the post-intervention assessment where the environment was optimized and the teacher was implementing learning strategies in a bodily-tactile manner. This research was able to showcase how creative arts could be used to enhance the bodily-tactile modality in pupils with CDB.
