Abstract

To address climate change, people must vote for parties that prioritise environmental protection. Although people support addressing climate change, they often do not reflect this in their voting behaviour. Although highly relevant, research on pro-environmental voting is limited and has poorly investigated the role of personal and perceived values and beliefs in shaping this behaviour. We surveyed 635 Dutch voters and used point-biserial correlations and logistic regression to examine the relationship between personal and perceived values, beliefs, and pro-environmental voting. As hypothesised, we found that both personal climate beliefs and personal biospheric and altruistic values were positively related to voting for a pro-environmental party. In contrast, perceived values and beliefs were not significantly associated. In the complete model, unexpectedly, personal beliefs appeared to be the most important explanation for pro-environmental voting, whereas perceiving strong climate beliefs in others was even significantly associated with a lower likelihood of voting for a pro-environmental party. Our results suggest that political practitioners may motivate people to vote for pro-environmental parties by addressing their personal beliefs about climate change and the impact of their vote, to close the gap between climate concerns and voting behaviour.
