Abstract
The factors that impact career success have long been studied, with personality and intelligence coming forward as two of the most important ones. Personality is sometimes divided into “dark and light” sides, with the Dark Triad of narcissism, Machiavellianism and psychopathy making up the dark side, and the Big Five of agreeableness, conscientiousness, extraversion, neuroticism and openness being the light side. This study aims to investigate whether the Dark Triad provides incremental validity over the BFI and Cognitive Ability, when predicting Career Success using a combination of Objective and Subjective Career Success. We predicted that the Dark Triad traits would positively relate to Career Success (H1), but that they would only hold a slight incremental validity over the BFI when predicting these same factors (H2). Additionally, we predicted Cognitive Ability to be positively related to Career Success (H3). Lastly, we expected the Dark Triad to provide no incremental validity in predicting Career Success, when accounting for both the BFI and Cognitive Ability (H4).The study had a sample size of N = 164 participants. All participants being working adults. Results provided partial support for hypothesis 1, with a positive relation found between career success and narcissism and Machiavellianism, but not for psychopathy. Hypothesis 2 was only supported when looking at Subjective Career Success. No relationship was found between Cognitive Ability and Career Success, leading to a rejection of Hypothesis 3. Hypothesis 4 was only supported when looking at Subjective Career Success. The study had a sample size of N = 164 participants. All participants were working adults. Keywords: Dark Triad, career success, cognitive ability, personality
