Abstract

This thesis presents a literature review on the discrepancy between subjective cognitive complaints (SCCs) and objective cognitive performance (OCP). The review is structured around three thematic domains that may contribute to this discrepancy. First, SCCs and OCP appear to reflect distinct constructs, with informant reports often showing stronger associations with objective measures than self-reports. Second, influencing factors such as emotional distress, reduced metacognitive abilities, and fatigue influence how individuals perceive and evaluate their cognitive functioning, thereby contributing to the observed discrepancy. Third, methodological factors such as the ecological validity of neuropsychological tests, the design of self-report instruments, and the reliability of testing may shape how discrepancies between SCCs and OCP are interpreted. Taken together, these findings suggest the need for a more nuanced understanding of cognitive complaints in clinical contexts. The thesis concludes by outlining practical implications, identifying limitations, and suggesting future directions, including the potential of digital tools to enhance ecological validity.
