Abstract

The literature about creativity mainly focuses on the creators. There is less known about the individuals who guide and stimulate these creators. However, these creative enablers may play an important role in the creative process. Creative enablers give guidance to people engaged in creative processes but are not necessarily responsible for the creative outcomes themselves. An example of a creative enabler is a record producer. A creative enabler such as a record producer has some kind of leadership role. Therefore, in the current study, a systematic literature review is conducted to link the role of a record producer with a specific leadership style (integrative creative leadership). The study aims to discover what similarities the roles have and especially where they differ. Four themes emerged as important: communication, informal leadership, creative brokerage, and ambiguity. The results show that producers and integrative creative leaders have some overlap but some essential differences as well. The results also show that the creative enablers are a promising concept to promote better creative leadership in organizations. The following practical implications emerged. First, the integrative creative leadership characteristics can help in getting creative individuals into leadership positions. Second, the insights can help in closing the gap between creativity and innovation because both roles core task is integrating creativity. Lastly, a closer look at creative enablers gives organizations insight into the creative process. They can learn from these insights and see what applies to their creative challenges. Keywords: creative enablers, record producers, integrative creative leadership
