Abstract
Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) is a neurodevelopmental disorder that may involve difficulties in certain aspects of daily life with varying severity. Parents of children with ASD may experience challenges and stressors in navigating family life daily. Resilience plays an essential role in the ability of parents to rebound from adversity and can therefore be seen as a beneficial resource. Cognitive emotion regulation strategies like acceptance have been effective in enhancing resilience, whereas self-blame and blaming other people have been linked with reduced resilience. Most research about these relationships has been done in Western countries. To address this gap, the present study explored cross-sectional data from 214 Indonesian parents of children with ASD. Participants completed self-report questionnaires assessing sociodemographic characteristics, family resilience and the use of cognitive emotion regulation strategies. The results showed a significant relationship between acceptance and overall family resilience, as well as the belief systems domain specifically, suggesting that higher levels of acceptance may be linked to stronger family belief systems resilience. No significant associations were found between acceptance, self-blame and other-blame, indicating that varying levels of acceptance were not associated with differences in self-blame or other-blame. These findings contribute to the emerging body of research on resilience and emotion regulation in non-Western countries, especially among Indonesian parents of children with ASD.
