Abstract
Abstract Background: Anhedonia, defined as a reduced ability to experience pleasure or to anticipate rewards, is a core symptom of depression, with deficits in reward anticipation representing one of its key components and a potential target for treatment. This literature review examines whether psychological interventions can enhance reward anticipation and reduce related depressive symptoms. Methods: A systematic search was conducted using PsycINFO, identifying studies until early 2025 that examined the impact of psychological interventions on reward anticipation in individuals with depression or elevated depressive symptoms. Inclusion criteria required the use of at least one outcome measure of reward anticipation. Risk of bias and study quality were evaluated, and findings were narratively synthesized. Results: Seven studies met inclusion criteria. Interventions included Behavioral Activation Treatment for Depression (BATD), Positive Affect Treatment (PAT), and guided mental imagery exercises. Five studies reported significant improvements in reward anticipation, and several reported concurrent reductions in depressive symptoms, particularly in anhedonia. Structured interventions (e.g., BATD, PAT) showed stronger and more consistent effects than brief interventions. Three studies examined moderators (trait anhedonia) and two assessed follow-up effects, with no sustained improvements observed. Conclusion: Psychological interventions, particularly those which are structured, incorporating multiple components can enhance reward anticipation in depression. While findings are promising, long-term effects remain uncertain, and further research is needed to clarify mechanisms of change and personalize treatments.
