Abstract
Self determination theory (SDT) is a theory about personality development and behavioral self-regulation, which states that the three psychological needs of competence, relatedness, and autonomy, influence an individual’s motivational style and self-regulatory style. While measurement instruments that measure these needs are sometimes used in the context of individuals who have ASD, they are not always designed to be used in this context. As a result the question can be posed about what this means for their psychometric quality, and the quality of the results found using these measurement instruments in this context. This methodological systematic review investigates the psychometric quality of existing measurement instruments for competence, relatedness, and/or autonomy, when they are used in this context. Three databases were utilized, ultimately five articles met inclusion criteria. The result is that out of the five featured measurement instruments two had inadequate methodological quality and uncertain psychometric quality, and three of the measurement instruments had adequate methodological quality and good psychometric quality. However, because of the small number of included studies, this review cannot make generalizable statements about the effects on psychometric quality when a measurement instrument that was not designed with individuals who have ASD in mind is used in a context that does involve them.
