Abstract

Generatiearmoede is een hardnekkig maatschappelijk probleem waarbij armoede zich over meerdere generaties binnen gezinnen voortzet en vaak gepaard gaat met chronische stress en verhoogde psychische belasting. Deze scoping review onderzocht wat bekend is over de relatie tussen generatiearmoede en psychopathologie binnen gezinnen, met aandacht voor onderliggende mechanismen, beschermende factoren en hiaten in de literatuur. Volgens de PRISMA-ScR-richtlijnen werd systematisch gezocht in PsycINFO, ERIC en WebOfScience, aangevuld met de Research Output van de Rijksuniversiteit Groningen. Tien relevante studies werden geïncludeerd. De resultaten suggereren een consistente en grotendeels bidirectionele samenhang: langdurige armoede kan het risico op psychische problematiek vergroten bij zowel kinderen als ouders, terwijl psychische problemen de kans op aanhoudende sociaaleconomische achterstand verhogen. Mogelijke verklarende mechanismen volgens de geïncludeerde studies zijn chronische en toxische stress, cumulatieve blootstelling aan risicofactoren en beperkte toegang tot hulpbronnen. Beschermende factoren omvatten onder andere toegang tot onderwijs en gezondheidszorg, inkomensondersteuning, warm ouderschap en sociale steun. Een geïntegreerde aanpak waarin armoedebestrijding en mentale gezondheidszorg worden gecombineerd is essentieel om intergenerationele patronen te doorbreken.
