Abstract
This study investigated whether participants’ cycling behaviour in terms of speed and lateral position control differed between a music condition and a control condition, and whether these behaviours varied between Dutch and non-Dutch participants. Results showed that participants cycled significantly faster while listening to music compared to the control condition, whereas lateral position remained unaffected. Additionally, Dutch participants cycled significantly faster than non-Dutch participants, but no difference was found in lateral position. No significant correlation was found between perceived mood change and actual speed change. However, perceived distracted attention was found to be negatively correlated with actual speed change. This study employed the newly developed Fytssimulator, a dynamic bicycle simulator that allows safe and controlled investigation of cycling behaviour. The results underscore the potential of the Fytssimulator as a valuable tool for future research on cycling performance, cross-cultural differences, and the influence of environmental or psychological factors under experimentally controlled conditions.
