Abstract

Unfinished tasks are a common workplace phenomenon linked to impaired employee wellbeing. Research has linked unfinished tasks to competence need satisfaction. However, the contingencies of this link are unclear, and there is no evidence linking unfinished tasks to the other basic psychological needs (relatedness and autonomy). In this study, we aim to examine the links between unfinished tasks and work-related basic need satisfaction, namely (1) competence, (2) autonomy, and (3) relatedness need satisfaction. Further, we test the moderating effects of supervisor support on all these links separately. We conducted a cross-sectional survey study with a convenience sample (N = 75) of working adults from Europe. We used linear regression analysis, and found a negative link between unfinished tasks and competence need satisfaction, and between unfinished tasks and autonomy need satisfaction. Contrary to expectations, supervisor support strengthened rather than weakened the negative link between unfinished tasks and competence need satisfaction. We contributed to the body of research by replicating the negative link between unfinished tasks and competence need satisfaction, and by establishing a link between unfinished tasks and autonomy need satisfaction. Further, contrary to expectations, we found that supervisor social support strengthens rather than weakens reactivity to unfinished tasks as a job stressor. Keywords: unfinished tasks, basic needs satisfaction, supervisor support
