Abstract

Over the years, many studies have reported on externalizing behavior in children (e.g. aggressive, delinquent and impulsive behavior). Parents and teachers are ignorant on how to handle those problems, hence more knowledge about associated factors was required. Research has shown that optimists possess better coping skills then pessimists and show better academic performances. Furthermore, good coping and academic skills have been found to be linked to decrease externalizing problems. In this bachelor thesis it was investigated whether optimism was associated with externalizing problems in children aged 6-7. It was expected that a higher level of optimism would be associated with a lower level of externalizing problems. The association had not been investigated before. Therefore, this study strove to obtain more knowledge about this association to provide information to parents and teachers. Data was collected from 89 children and their teachers of seven primary schools. Children had to react to six statements of the Youth Life Orientation Test, to measure optimism. Teachers reported on the externalizing problems of the children as part of the Teacher’s Checklist of Psychopathology. A linear regression analysis was performed. No evidence was found that the level of optimism was related to the level of externalizing problems in children aged 6-7. This result was contrary to the expectation. It was possible that there was no association, but another possible explanation may have been that there were two groups of optimists. In the first group optimism may be associated with less externalizing problems due to good coping and academic skills, whereas for another group optimism may be associated with more externalizing behavior because of the uninhibited effects of exuberance. Because of the limitations of this study, including a small group of children showing severe externalizing problems, further research on the association between optimism and externalizing problems was recommended.
