Abstract

Optimism and risk-taking are associated in adolescents and adults. The link between optimism and risk-taking behavior has not been investigated in 6- and 7-year-old children. There is evidence that adults and adolescents with higher levels of optimism, also engage in risk-taking behavior more easily. Because this is not yet known for 6- and 7-year-old children, it is important to investigate this to possibly address early risk-taking behavior. In this bachelor thesis this link between optimism and risk-taking behavior is being investigated. It was expected that there would be a positive association between optimism and risk-taking behavior in which children with higher levels of optimism would also show more risk-taking behavior. This research was conducted by collecting data from N = 83 children from seven primary schools in the Netherlands. Risk-taking behavior was measured with the Balloon Emotional Learning Task (BELT), a computer task in which the participants had to pump up 45 balloons. The total amount of pumps served as the estimator for risk-taking behavior. Optimism was measures with a shortened and adapted version of the Youth Life Orientation Test (YLOT), a questionnaire that included six items that were converted into a summation score. After analyzing the data with a linear regression analysis there were some unexpected results. There was a significant negative association between optimism and risk-taking behavior, which means that higher levels of optimism were associated with less risk-taking behavior instead of more. A possible explanation might be that optimism is associated with better school performances. Possibly, children with higher levels of optimism were better in estimating when they should and should not inflate the balloon to earn as many points and did not necessarily take more risk. In future research school performance could be investigated in relation to optimism and risk-taking behavior to investigate this possible association.
