Abstract

To monitor recidivism risk during treatment, the HKT-R is the most used, but time-consuming risk assessment instrument in the forensic psychiatry in the Netherlands. The IFTE, an instrument partly based on the clinical items of the HKT-R, is thought to be less time consuming. However, if the IFTE is to be used instead of the clinical items of the HKT-R to monitor recidivism risk during treatment, their outcomes should be similar. The goal of this study was to find out if the IFTE items can replace the clinical items of the HKT-R to reduce the time burden of clinicians. Therefore the following research questions were formulated: Is there a significant difference between the highest score on the items of multiple IFTE measurements and the clinical items of the HKT-R; is there a significant difference between the mean score of the items of multiple IFTE measurements and the clinical items of the HKT-R; and how should the IFTE items be rounded in order to resemble the clinical items of the HKT-R? Paired t-tests were done to compare HKT-R clinical items and the highest and mean scores of the corresponding IFTE’s of 65 participants from the FPC Dr. S. van Mesdag clinic. Significant differences between both the highest score and the mean score of some of the items of the multiple IFTE measurements and the clinical items of the HKT-R were found. This shows that not all IFTE and HKT-R items correspond with each other, thus the IFTE cannot be used as an alternative for the clinical items of the HKT-R yet. More research can be done in which instrument is more predictive of recidivism risk to see which instrument is leading, and with more IFTE measurements per HKT-R to determine if the IFTE can replace the clinical items of the HKT-R.
