Abstract
Research shows that tracking can have a negative influence on the achievement of students from lower social backgrounds. The aim of this current study was to integrate research on different forms of tracking in schools and to deepen the understanding of tracking in schools by conducting a systematic scoping review. A second related aim of this study was to determine whether different forms of tracking in schools have an influence on the achievement of students from lower social backgrounds. This systematics scoping review was based on the PRISMA-P protocol and PsycINFO and ERIC were used as the databases. Fourteen studies met the inclusion criteria and were thematically analyzed. The results of this study were mixed in the sense that eight studies found a negative influence of school tracking on the achievement of students from lower social backgrounds. Still, four studies attribute this negative effect to other factors. Finally, one study did not find an influence of school tracking and one study even indicated that tracking in schools can benefit students from lower social backgrounds. This research sheds light on what kind of influence different forms of tracking have on the achievement of students from lower social backgrounds. To gain more insight into the influence of different forms of tracking, more research is needed. Keywords: between-school tracking, within-school tracking, achievement, social background.
