Abstract

Background. Worldwide suicide is one of the main causes of death in late childhood and adolescence. Exposure to suicide seems to be one of the strongest predictors for suicidality, and there are data that suggest that contagion is related to a big part of the suicide(attempts) in adolescence. The aim of this study was to systematically review literature regarding contagion of suicidal behavior in youth. Method. On the 13th of April 2022, six databases (ERIC, PsychInfo, PubMed, SafetyLit, SocIndex, Web of Science) were systematically searched for articles using English terms. Articles were included if the study: was scientific, empirical, peer-reviewed and written in English; focused on contagion of suicidal behavior in youth aged between 10 and 24 years and was available in full-text. The included studies were assessed on their quality. Data from the studies was extracted about the country, type of suicidal behavior, sample, year of recruitment, method of data collection and the most important results. Results. A total of 24 studies were included. The data were divided into eight different levels: family, friends, peers, media, specific settings, personal characteristics, theory of assortative relating and the social learning theory, and possible preventions. Conclusion. There are disagreements within the articles about peers, media, specific settings and the theories. Some say they are responsible for or can explain contagion for a large part, other say it is or it can not. Looking to personal characteristics, there are lot of uncertain, individual findings which are not confirmed or examined by others. It will be a good addition to do further research within these categories to gain a better understanding of the phenomenon of contagion of suicidal behavior among young people. It can be stated, however, that suicide behavior from family members and friends play an important role in contagion of suicidal behavior.
