Abstract

Positive employee perceptions of leader effectiveness are crucial for the functioning of organizations. It is important from both a theoretical and practical perspective to understand when leaders might be perceived as effective by their employees. Therefore, the goal of this research was to understand factors that may influence employee perceptions of perceived leader effectiveness. Based on insights on fear of power loss and antecedents of leader effectiveness we predicted that leader fear of power loss would be positively related to leader self-serving behavior, which in turn would be negatively related to leader effectiveness. We tested our hypotheses in a cross-sectional dyadic field study (N = 156) among managers and employees. We did not find support for our first hypothesis that leader fear of power loss is positively associated with leader self-serving behavior. However, we did find support for our second hypothesis, suggesting a negative relationship between leader self-serving behavior and leader effectiveness. Finally, we did not find support for our this hypothesis, suggesting that the relationship between leader fear of power loss and leader effectiveness is mediated by leader self-serving behavior. We conclude by discussing potential implications for our work and for future research on leader fear of power loss and employee perceptions of leader effectiveness.
