Abstract
Abusive supervision has tremendous negative impacts on individual employees, teams, and the organization at large. Therefore, it is important to understand under what conditions leaders are more or less likely to engage in abusive supervision. In this research, we specifically focused on leader Machiavellianism and leader fear of power loss as potential antecedents to abusive supervision. Based on previous research that has linked leader Machiavellianism to abusive supervision, we predicted a positive relationship between leader Machiavellianism and abusive supervision (Hypothesis 1). Moreover, we also examined whether fear of power loss functions as a moderator in this relationship. We expected that fear of power loss strengthens the positive relationship between leader Machiavellianism and abusive supervision (Hypothesis 2). We conducted a multi-source field study among a sample of 156 dyads of supervisors and subordinates to test our hypotheses. We did not find any support for any of our hypotheses. However, we did find a significant relationship between leader Machiavellianism and fear of power loss. This relationship may be interesting to explore further in future research. We discuss theoretical and practical implications in the discussion section.
