Abstract

There is widespread evidence that childhood maltreatment survivors are at heightened risk for revictimization, but unclarities remain regarding underlying mechanisms. Notwithstanding an influx of studies covering this topic, a broad conceptual model is lacking and methodological limitations are observed. The current data- and theory-driven study is the first to test several mediators concurrently in one overarching model with the objective to detect those mediators, with interactions, most predictive for revictimization. Data from an international sample of female psychology students (n = 2345) were analysed via structural equation modelling. The multifaceted nature of revictimization was affirmed, showing that many pathways are involved. Early maladaptive schemas, peritraumatic dissociation and PTSD emerged as the most important risk factors and might thus be targets for preventative interventions. Future research might benefit from an ecological perspective while taking characteristics of the perpetrator and environment into account. Key words: childhood maltreatment, adulthood victimization, revictimization, risk factors
