A thesis is an aptitude test for students. The approval of the thesis is proof that the student has sufficient research and reporting skills to graduate but does not guarantee the quality of the research and the results of the research as such, and the thesis is therefore not necessarily suitable to be used as an academic source to refer to. If you would like to know more about the research discussed in this thesis and any publications based on it, to which you could refer, please contact the supervisor mentioned.
Abstract
Teacher shortage is a problem that keeps increasing (Den Brok et al., 2017). In this study it was investigated whether there is a difference between first-year pre-service teachers (N = 21), fourth-year pre-service teachers (N = 25) and novice teachers (N = 20) in terms of motivation to choose for a teaching profession or stay in the teaching profession. To investigate this, a quantitative cross-sectional survey research was conducted, using the FITChoice Scale designed by Watt and Richardson (2007). Results showed that there are indications that first-year pre-service teachers differ from novice teachers on the constructs social utility value and intrinsic career value. Fourth-year pre-service teachers differ from novice teachers on the constructs time for family, social utility value, intrinsic career value, fallback career and expertise. First-year pre-service teachers and fourth-year pre-service teachers have higher scores on intrinsic motivations and extrinsic motivations, in comparison to novice teachers who have higher scores on intrinsic motivations, extrinsic motivations and altruistic motivations. However the reliability of several scales used in this study is weak. Follow-up research is essential to determine whether the differences found in this study actually exist between the groups.
