Abstract

Families with multiple problems face a lot of problems during their whole life. These parent(s) and child(ren) struggle with long-lasting socioeconomic and psychosocial problems. Different studies show that, within these families, externalizing behavioral problems occur more often in boys than girls. Girls show more internalizing behavioral problems. The main purpose of this study was to determine the effectiveness of two different interventions: MDFT and PMTO, and if this effect was moderated by gender. The study was conducted on an existing dataset. A questionnaire (CBCL) was completed multiple times for 41 children. This questionnaire was filled in by parents at the start (T0) and end of the intervention (T1). In order to answer the research question, descriptive and testing statistics (two-way-anova) were used. The results showed that both the interventions decreased the t-scores of externalizing problems. MDFT showed a stronger decrease (-8.382) in t-scores than PMTO (-4.054). However, there was no significant difference between the interventions. Boys had significantly more externalizing problems compared to girls, in both interventions. Nevertheless, there’s no significant difference in effectiveness between boys and girls from both interventions. Based on these results, this study concludes that MDFT and PMTO are both even effective in terms of decreasing externalizing behavioral problems. In addition, boys had significantly more externalizing problems than girls. A potential follow-up study could pay extra attention to this. A critical remark to this study concerns the differences in age of the youth who participated in the interventions, because the interventions were both aimed at a different age group.
