Abstract
Organizational cynicism can have detrimental effects on performance within organizations. In the current study, we investigate the role of humble leadership in potentially buffering the negative effects of organizational cynicism on team performance. Based on previous research on organizational cynicism and humble leadership, we propose that (a) organizational cynicism is negatively associated with team performance and that (b) humble leadership may buffer this negative effect of organizational cynicism on team performance. By collecting data via a field survey, including leaders and team members, we tested our hypotheses in a sample of 35 military teams. Contrary to our predictions, we did not find support for any of our hypotheses. However, exploratory analyses, suggest that humble leadership may have a positive effect on team performance via team learning behaviours. Furthermore, we discuss potential theoretical and practical implications of our research. Keywords: organizational cynicism, humble leadership, team performance, team learning behaviour
