Abstract

The present study focused on identifying relation profiles of children with special education needs. Participants were N = 265 Dutch students from three primary schools for students with special educational needs, in the north of the Netherlands. Social and learning behavior of the child was assessed at their school by a teacher or a remedial teacher. Cluster analysis was used to find profiles of children using their relations to their teacher and their classmates as input variables for the analysis. Based on previous research, it was expected that at least two profiles could be distinguished: one profile of children with positive relationships with both their teacher and their classmates and one profile of children with negative relationships with their teacher and their classmates. LatentGOLD was used to perform the cluster analysis. Four clusters were identified. Most of the children (36%) were assigned to a cluster that included children with a moderate negative relationship with both their teacher and their classmates. Furthermore, another cluster containing 24% of the children, included children with a problematic negative relationship with both their teacher and their classmates. The remaining two clusters (29% and 11%) included children with a normal relationship with their teacher and their classmates. A high correlation between the relationship of the student with the teacher and the relationship of the student with their classmates was found. It is recommended that children with a negative relationship with their teacher and classmates provide support for improvement. Because of the high correlation between the two relationships improving just one relationship could already make a lot of difference. For future research it would be recommended to use data from schools for children with special education needs from all over the Netherlands and to compare the outcomes of LatentGOLD with other cluster analysis methods. Keywords: relation profiles, students with special educational needs, cluster analysis, primary school, students’ wellbeing
