Abstract

Abstract In this study we did research about the relationship between formal leisure time and subjective wellbeing and if there’s a difference in terms of age. Leisure time is nowadays an important part of people’s life. In an era where health is number one priority, taking a break and relaxing is a great way to unwind, re-charge, and boost your mood. Many researchers did research about the effects of leisure time activities including physical activities, those effects are more immediately visible, such as feeling more fit and having more energy. By contrast, not many researchers did research about the effects of formal leisure time on subjective wellbeing excluding physical activities. It thus was important to do research about this effect. We found that formal leisure time has no effect on subjective wellbeing. We did find evidence that age influences the effect of formal leisure time on subjective health. It turns out that age strengthens the effect of formal leisure time on subjective wellbeing of Dutch participants. The effect is positive; the effect of formal leisure time on one’s subjective health becomes stronger when an individual has an higher age. Future research is needed to examine the effects further.
