Abstract
Perfectionism is a common characteristic and is supported to be of a transdiagnostic nature across eating disorders, anxiety, and other psychopathology. Therefore, the present study investigates the relationship between clinical perfectionism and eating disorder symptoms within a nonclinical sample (N = 354, M age = 31, SD age = 14.84, 71.1% female) and the mediating effect of anxiety within this relationship. With use of the 4 step procedure by Baron and Kenny (1986) simple linear regression is used to investigate the relationships between eating disorder symptoms, anxiety, and clinical perfectionism. Afterwards, multiple linear regression showed the actual mediating effect of anxiety. The results show a significant positive association between eating disorder symptoms and clinical perfectionism as well as anxiety partially mediating the relationship between perfectionism and eating disorder symptoms. The findings confirm potential risk factors for the development of eating disorders, which is helpful information for the prevention of eating disorders. Future research should focus on a longitudinal design concerning these variables to establish the causal relationship.
