Abstract

In the Netherlands, the English language is a compulsory part of the school curriculum and exam for both vmbo-tl and mbo-niveau-4. Even though it is expected from vmbo-tl schools to prepare students properly for mbo-niveau-4, there seems to be a discrepancy for the subject English. It seems that performing well on the English exam at vmbo-tl does not guarantee a good performance on the English exam at mbo-niveau-4. Furthermore, not performing well on the mbo-niveau-4 English exam may reduce the chance of a mbo-niveau-4 diploma in a timely manner. A qualitive study was conducted to investigate the connection between these two educational sectors for the subject English. The research questions of the study were: (1) “To what extent does the content of the subject English in vmbo-tl match the requirements set by mbo-niveau-4 for English, according to the vmbo-tl and mbo-niveau-4 teachers?”; (2) “What knowledge and skills are tested during the final English exam of vmbo-tl and are these knowledge and skills sufficient to pass the mbo-niveau-4 final exam in English, according to the vmbo-tl and mbo-niveau-4 teachers?” and (3) “To what extent do English teachers find the connection between vmbo-tl and mbo-niveau-4 fitting for English?” Data were collected through semi-structured interviews. The sample consisted of seven respondents: four English teachers from pre-vocational education and three from vocational education in the north of the Netherlands. The results indicate that the professional content and didactic approach differ between the vmbo-tl and mbo-niveau-4 for the subject English. English courses and the final exam do not necessarily prepare students for mbo-niveau-4. Furthermore, there is no discernible difference in level for both the English lessons and the final English exams of vmbo-tl and mbo-niveau-4. In both cases level A2 is required for the school exam and level B1 is required for the final exam. Moreover, the vmbo-tl and mbo-niveau-4 exams use a similar format: both exams include a listening test. Teachers suggested that the English exam is almost never a decisive factor in obtaining a vmbo-tl of mbo-niveau-4 diploma and students almost always pass the exam. Teachers further indicated that there is much ignorance about the connection between vmbo-tl and mbo-niveau-4. The most desirable situation mentioned would be a continuous learning trajectory where teachers from both educational sectors can support the needs of individual students. It is recommended that (1) vocationally-oriented English should not only be taught but also be examined, (2) the difficulty level for mbo-niveau-4 is raised and finally (3) to have more contact and deliberation between the two educational sectors.
