Abstract

Despite anecdotal evidence and numerous creativity theories implying their effectiveness, aleatory creativity techniques stay gravely under researched. Due to empirical research being both sparse and conflicting, we aim to provide an overview of the current state of research on the relationship between random stimulation and creativity by conducting a semi-systematic literature review. Additionally, we discuss mediating and moderating variables on the effect of random stimulation on creativity present in empirical research. We adhered to methodological guidelines provided by the PRISMA protocol. A total of fifteen relevant articles were found. Overall, providing random stimulation appears to be facilitative towards most creativity dimension (especially fluency, originality, novelty, and quality) while acting as an inhibitor in other cases (appropriateness, usefulness). Furthermore, there appears to be a moderating effect of time of stimulus insertion, anxiety, and positive affect on the relationship between random stimulation and creativity. Notably, a large number of non-significant effects were found suggesting the presence of several inconsistencies between the studies. We address said inconsistencies and provide future research suggestions to drive the research field on the effect of random stimulation and creativity as well as its moderating and mediating variables forward
