Abstract
Types of leadership styles can influence the experience of a regulatory fit, depending on the self-regulation strategies of an individual. Previous studies show that aspects of self-regulation can interact with leadership styles. This research investigates whether locomotors feel more comfortable with a directive leadership style, whereas assessors would feel more comfortable with an advisory leadership style. Leaders have influence on the goal pursuit of individuals on a daily basis, which oftentimes makes it harder for an individual to choose their own strategies. This research focuses on the influence of advisory and directive leadership styles on locomotion and assessment, by looking into a possible regulatory fit. Accordingly, the influence of having choices on level of satisfaction within locomotors and assessors is investigated. For this research, we used a between-subjects design (N = 100), namely two conditions for the type of leadership (directive vs. advisory) and two orientations (locomotion vs. assessment). We found no support for the preferences of leadership styles of locomotors or assessors. No difference in satisfactory level was found based on having or not having choices. Consequently, we conclude that we have found no support for the preference of advisory or directive leadership on locomotion or assessment, and found no preference for the presence or absence of choice.
