Abstract

Responding to the underrepresentation of research on leader knowledge hiding this study’s aim was to investigate prosocial orientation as a potential negative predictor. Moreover, based on trait activation theory, fear of power loss was examined as a contextual variable weakening the negative relationship between prosocial orientation and leader knowledge hiding. To test the propositions the study adopted a web-based scenario experiment for which a sample of 98 leaders was selected and participants were assigned to three different fear of power loss conditions. Data analysis yielded neither a significant effect of prosocial orientation on leader knowledge hiding nor support for fear of power loss as a moderating variable to the relationship. Nonetheless the study provides future research with a novel conceptualization of prosocial orientation based upon well-established theories. Furthermore, within the research process a prosocial orientation scale was developed and validated. Keywords: knowledge hiding, prosocial orientation, fear of power loss, leadership
