Abstract
This study investigates the process of decision-making in professional foster homes. The design of the study is a qualitative research design with semi-structured interviews (N=4). The results show that while young people are consistenly consulted in the decision-making process, foster parents ultimately maintain control. The level of participation varies on the complexity of the decision. Every day decisions allow for greater youth participation compared to more complex decisions. Openness and explanation are vital in guiding through the process. The theoretical frameworks in this study do not fully align with the practical experiences gathered from the interviews. The role of the professional team that supports the foster parents is crucial, and is implicated to be a factor to enhance participation. Additionally, the study recommends training for foster parents in facilitating participation.
