Abstract
This thesis explores the impact of transitioning from primary to secondary school on student well-being and academic success, with a focus on the influence of the age at which students undergo this transition. By comparing the outcomes between the Netherlands and Portugal— countries with distinct educational systems and norms regarding the age of transition—this study provides insights into how these differences affect student experiences. Dutch students typically transition around the age of 12, whereas Portuguese students transition at the younger age of 9. Utilizing a systematic literature review methodology, this research synthesizes findings from ten peer-reviewed articles to examine variations in student well-being and academic performance. The analysis reveals that Portuguese students, who transition at a younger age, consistently exhibit declines in self-concept and self-esteem, in contrast to Dutch students who experience mixed outcomes. Academically, the decline in performance among Portuguese students post-transition is more uniform, whereas outcomes for Dutch students vary significantly, influenced by individual differences. These results indicate that the younger age of transition in Portugal may lead to more pronounced negative impacts when compared to the Netherlands. The study underscores the importance of considering age and developmental stages in educational transitions and highlights the need for tailored support programs to mitigate potential adverse effects on students.
